I don’t think it’s stupid at all and I never know quite what to call it myself. I define it as writing non-marketing practical information on a topic that isn’t too technical. Information you need to do things, understand your options, or make decisions – anything from information on how to apply for a driving license, to what to do if you have an issue with your landlord, to the process you must go through if want to apply to university.

An example would be most of the info on the gov.uk website, or information in a knowledge base or a how-to guide. I’ve found that many people associate ‘copywriting’ with marketing only, and ‘technical writing’ with technology or very technical fields. So, I’m not sure what the best term would be. I saw the term ‘information writer’ advertised a while ago, and I just liked it. I’m sure someone else has a better term for it though. I’d be very interested to hear what other people call this kind of writing.

Can you explain what information writing is? I mean, that seems like a stupid question, but I don’t mind asking them.
