Thought leadership, content strategy, campaign messaging, content planning, creative copywriting, editing, and proofreading. Yes, it's a list. A list of all the things I get involved in here at AECOM, where I lead thought leadership and content for Europe and India. It's not exhaustive by any means, but a reflection of the variety of my day-to-day work - which I love. AECOM is a huge global infrastructure consultancy, so I need to be on top of a huge range of topics. This week's to-do list comprises articles on the benefits of data analytics, powering up green ammonia production in Paraguay, and India's first fully underground metro corridor in Mumbai. It's certainly a job for the intellectually curious. Personally, I am an advocate for strategic planning and knowing your audience. Content must be targeted. I'm also really enjoying trying out various AI-powered tools that are helping my team to produce quality content at scale and pace. I'm just entering my fourth decade in the writing business. In that time, I've been a managing editor, food columnist (loved that), feature writer, PR account manager (hated that), production editor, and a contributor to the Rough Guide to Japan. Yes, that's another list. But after more than 30 years in the business - there's a lot to include!

B2B copywriter for IT and tech businesses: blogs, case studies, white papers/ebooks. I am a qualified marketing consultant and copywriter, with more than 30 years' experience. I am based in South Croydon, Surrey and work with companies in the UK. I specialise in writing for B2B technology companies, which includes writing about software, hardware, cloud computing, cyber security, SaaS, machine learning, IoT and the like. I have significant experience in supply chain, ERP, CRM, WMS and logistics and transport management software. For many of my clients though, I also write about current trends or business angles that affect their services, meaning I write less technical and more general business/economy and opinion pieces. Businesses tend to hire me for ongoing projects: four blog posts a month, one case study or one white paper per quarter ... that sort of thing. But I am available for one-off pieces too. I mainly write blog posts, case studies, white papers and ebooks, but also write email newsletters, brochures and press releases. As a qualified marketer, I can often take on marketing strategy and planning assignments, including managing website revamps, content strategy, gap analysis and planning - typically for £1m+ businesses. I’m a tea-drinking copywriter from Hertfordshire, and winner (mostly) of the daily battle against some pretty independently-minded hair. I specialise in verbal identity (brand voice and messaging) and conversational copy for brands that want to be noticed – throwing in plenty of creativity and strategic thinking along the way. As well as the unpredictable hair, I also have over fifteen years of professional writing experience across the commercial, public and charity sectors. I’ve worked as a freelance copywriter since 2017, and I utterly love my job. I work direct with B2C and B2B businesses and charities, as well as in partnership with design studios and creative agencies.

You’re a business owner. No, wait – creative director? Head of copy? Marketing manager? Recruitment consultant? (Look, I’m a freelance copywriter, OK? Not Derren ruddy Brown. Although we do share a hairline, I’ll give you that.) Anyway. Words matter in your role. In fact, your success depends on them. But it’s not strictly your job to write them. And even if you wanted to, you wouldn’t have the time. Too many deals to do. Pitches to win. Teams to manage. Clients to shmooze. So don’t sweat the scribbling. Leave it to me. And I’ll leave you to ace the rest. Deal? 📧 jj@joejeffries.co.uk 💻 See how I can help 🌊 Freelance copywriter in Brighton – that's me 💂🏼‍♂️ Need a freelance copywriter in London? That's also me (well, more or less) “I needed to sound like a real person – a better written version of my spoken voice. I also really needed to remove confusion about what I do and provide for my three types of clients in a concise and likeable way. You’ve captured this really approachable yet sharp-tongued persona in the copy. It tells the story I knew my agency needed. Definitely no more confusion about who I am as a personality and what I can do for my clients. My website copy is now the perfect vetting tool I needed for prospective clients to read. I help brands find their voice, articulate their message and connect with their audience. Before becoming a freelancer, I was a (rather exacting) client. I used to be Head of Digital for some blue-chip brands, so ROI is never far from my mind as I put words through their paces. I’m fluent in all things digital, and I love collaborating with developers and designers to create content with impact. My side-hustle is sociolinguistics and my research is published in the journal Gender and Language. That means I’m just as happy conducting in-depth research and communicating complex ideas as I am writing killer UX copy. As a seasoned freelancer and contractor, I bring all my expertise and experience to each new project, whether that’s writing for a heritage brand or creating a launch strategy for a start-up.

“I am at my best in the morning, so I try to schedule all creative tasks before lunch. If I’m struggling in the morning, I use the classic strategies of changing where I’m working from, taking a break, or exercising in the hope of a Eureka moment.”

Declan Morton, Copywriter.Declan Morton

“I’ve always enjoyed writing but I didn’t set up on my own account until 2019. At that point I had been teaching for nearly two decades and had become frustrated with the academy trust to which my then school belonged. I took a plunge and set up as a freelance writer.”

Jo Watson

“I wish we were all more honest when speaking to newer or younger copywriters and telling them what to expect in their career. It’s a hard job, it’s constantly evolving, and it’s still nowhere near as widely respected (as both an art and a science) as it should be.”

Abby King

“Let your work breathe. While it’s tempting to send over to the client once a piece is ready, I try to give it at least 24 hours (where time allows!) before I go back in, review and send.”
